 WHAT’S UP TODAY!

Beware of Hoax in the Midst of a Pandemic

It seems like seeing hoax information has become part of our daily Internet consumption, which usually aims to deceive the people into believing something that is not true. Rapid technological advances, especially social media, have become a source of information for the people to trust and rely on. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the spread of hoaxes is increasing. Incorrect news of Covid-19 in the community can certainly worsen the pandemic situation, causing unrest and fear in some community groups.

Danger of Spreading Hoax

Although the spread of hoax news can be subject to penalties based on the ITE Law, there are still many people who spread fake news. Hoaxes can cause fatal losses. This often happens in the community, for example, such as information about the existence of an antidote to the Covid-19 virus, with this information making people feel safe with this antidote, thus ignoring the recommendations for health protocols that have been regulated by the government.

Cases of Hoax Regarding Covid-19

Currently, hoax news is widely spread on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Of all the hoaxes that were spread, as many as 893 of them have been taken down. The spread of hoaxes is also found in the WhatsApp application, this is a problem because it causes parents to easily believe hoax news. The impact of the circulation of hoax news has made the wider community make the wrong assumptions in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is important for the public to recognize the truth of information related to Covid-19.

Law Enforcement Perpetrators of Hoax Spreading

Seeing the spread of hoaxes that are increasingly spreading in the community, the Indonesian government through the Communications and Information Technology as part of the Task Force for the Acceleration of Handling Covid-19 immediately provides strict sanctions for those who spread hoaxes. The sanctions that will be imposed on the perpetrators are enforced based on Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning the ITE Law. Article 45A paragraph (1) of the ITE Law states that anyone who intentionally spreads false and misleading news and causes consumer losses in electronic transactions can be subject to a maximum imprisonment of six years or a maximum fine of 1 billion.

Looking at how hoax news has been creating anxiety in the community, we need to be more aware and careful in responding to news on the Internet. It would be better for us to check the authenticity of the news using various hoax checking applications and online services available, or by checking the source of the news, including to see the originality of the images and videos attached in the news. This is highly important since there are people who can manipulate photos or videos to intentionally provoke people. In conclusion, read the news completely before you decide to share it to others, and make sure the news is valid based on facts and reality. Let’s be wise in responding to news on the Internet.

Here’s How to Keep

Your Personal Data Safe!

In the digital era, the Internet has provided convenience and benefits for its users. However, it is undeniable that there are also cybercrime activities such as data theft, hacking and much more. For this reason, the security of personal data is very important to maintain, where now personal data can be inputted and accessed online. To protect yourself from cybercrimes, let’s look at how to protect your personal data below.

Use Complicated Passwords and Change them Periodically

Make sure the password used is not easy to guess and you should also include a combination of letters, numbers, symbols and capital letters in each application. And don’t forget to change passwords regularly and try each application to have a different password. Stay alert and careful when visiting sites on the Internet.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Activate

Enable two-factor authentication as an additional layer of protection that can protect your account from cybercriminals that will steal your data. Where this two-factor authentication code requires an additional code that will be sent to the account owner via text message or email when logging into a particular account.

Be Careful When Using Public WiFi Networks

When using free WiFi networks in public areas, avoid entering personal data such as usernames, passwords and other personal information. That matter can cause cybercrime because everyone can see your activity while using WiFi.

Don't Upload Personal Information Details

One of the things that must be considered is maintaining the security of personal data such as telephone numbers, email addresses, and personal information (KTP, SIM, KK, or something like). Sharing personal data can provide additional information about yourself and can be misused by irresponsible parties. So, understand and be aware of the information you want to share.

Don't Carelessly Open Links in Email & SMS

Please be alert if you receive an email, SMS or other media sent by a suspicious party by paying attention to your email address and phone number. Usually the message contains a suspicious link that tells you to click the link. Links sent by suspicious parties are usually unofficial or fake which results in hackers being able to access your personal data.
