Hello from
Our President Director.
People are now having more options for connecting to the Internet. The transmission media also vary; some use fixed line cables such as fiber optics, while others use electromagnetic waves such as radio frequencies and satellites. Then, which option is best for people nowadays? Basically, these options can certainly complete each other where both can meet the ever-increasing people’s digital needs and can support the acceleration of equitable Internet access, especially in Indonesia. In this edition of Inspire, we will share some information on the differences between fiber optic and satellite, so you can find out which Internet suits your needs.
As an integrated digital infrastructure company in Indonesia, Biznet also continues to innovate by officially launching and operating its first submarine fiber optic cable, named Biznet Nusantara Cable System-1 (BNCS-1), which also aims to reduce the digital gap between large and small cities in Indonesia. You can also read information about BNCS-1 in the July 2024 edition of Biznet Inspire Digital Magazine. So, happy reading!

The Latest Network Infrastructure Technology
Recently you might read news about the Internet infrastructure including fiber optic and satellite. Then, how do we understand the differences between these technologies, especially in this digital era, the Internet has become a primary need for society. However, many areas in Indonesia still lack Internet access, so fiber optic and satellite infrastructure is a solution for providing equitable internet access to communities. Here are the differences between fiber optic and satellite that you need to know:
The Speed
Fiber optic cables can provide very high and stable speeds. On the other hand, satellite-based
Internet is quite fast for everyday activity like browsing, but it has a weakness in terms of latency.
Satellite Internet tends to have higher latency due to the distance the signal must travel, causing
a slight delay in response. This can be an issue, for example, when playing online games that require
low latency.
The Coverage
Fiber optic cables are an infrastructure that can reach islands, areas and regions in big
cities through both land and sea cables. However, satellite networks have wider coverage
in more remote and hard-to-reach areas that are difficult for fiber optic cables to reach,
such as mountains and coastal regions.
The Installation
Fiber optic cable in Indonesia is usually installed by technicians from the provider, users only
need to wait for the technician to come and install the necessary devices. As for satellite networks,
users have to do the installation themselves and place the equipment in a location with a clear view
of the sky, such as the roof of the house. This can be challenging, especially for those living in apartments
or places with limited space. Obstructions between the antenna and the sky can reduce the quality of the
received signal.
Both infrastructure technologies, fiber optic and satellite, have their own
advantages, with the same goal of supporting equitable access across
Indonesia. This ensures that people can easily receive opportunities and
information in this digital era.
“With better access tothe Internet, people do more searches.”

Biznet Launches Its First Submarine Cable, Biznet Nusantara Cable System-1 (BNCS-1)
Biznet officially launched its first submarine cable through the Biznet Nusantara Cable System (BNCS-1) on June 20, 2024, in Bali, Indonesia. Throughout 2022 to 2023, Biznet developed the BNCS-1, a submarine fiber optic cable network connecting Java, Sumatra, and Bangka islands with a distance of approximately 100 KM. The BNCS-1 network consists of 24 pairs (48 cores) of fiber optic cables using the latest Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology. Each 1 pair (2 cores) of fiber optic cable can transmit data at 96 x 400 Gbps = 38.4 Tbps. With a total of 24 pairs, the BNCS-1 network has a total capacity of 24 x 38.4 Tbps = 921.6 Tbps. This network capacity can be increased in line with DWDM technology advancements.
The construction of BNCS-1 is expected to provide high-speed Internet connectivity between islands in Indonesia, accelerating equitable access to digitalization and modernization of society through digital connectivity between islands and the world.

Choosing an Internet Connection
According to Your Needs
With the advent of the Internet supported by technologies such as fiber optic and satellite, there are now more options for internet connections available to the public. Given these various options, how do you choose the best internet connection?
1. Know Your Digital Activities
Everyone has different activities, resulting in varying internet needs. If your daily activities are quite demanding and require faster internet, such as uploading/downloading large files, online gaming, live streaming, and so on, it is recommended to use the internet with fiber optic technology that can provide higher and more stable speeds.
2. Ensure Your Area is Covered
Essentially, fiber optic and satellite technologies complement each other. Currently, fiber optic infrastructure in Indonesia is still limited to major cities, whereas satellite-based Internet can reach smaller areas. So, if your area is already covered by fiber optic cables, you can use fiber optic Internet that can provide you with higher speed Internet.
3. Adjust to Your Budget
Fiber optic Internet offers higher speed service packages at more affordable prices, while satellite Internet usually has more expensive service packages. Although satellite Internet can reach smaller areas, this must still be adjusted to the purchasing power of the people in those areas.
The choice is actually in the hands of the people, depending on their specific needs. One thing is certain, having an Internet connection with a big bandwidth capacity is now possible for all of us. Indonesians now have the option of high-speed Internet services to support their digital activities without worry about bandwidth limitations. Watching over-the-top (OTT) services in 4K quality, uploading large files, and having online meetings without fear of lagging bandwidth can now be done at home, where people now don’t need to come to a café or working space for connecting to a fast Internet. So, let’s develop our potential by becoming creative digital citizens who are ready to compete in the international market.
